Belmont Baseball Drops Doubleheader at Florida Gulf Coast
 
GAME DAY CENTRAL

FT. MYERS, Fla. – The Belmont baseball team (8-20, 5-12) dropped both of its’ contests to Florida Gulf Coast (25-7, 15-2) at Swanson Stadium in Ft. Myers, Fla. on Friday.

Here’s the recap for each game:

Game 1

Belmont dropped the first contest against Florida Gulf Coast, 7-6, in 10 innings.

Junior Chris Manning (Nashville, Tenn.) got the loss for Belmont and his record is now 1-3.

J.J. Crumbley (5-0) earned the win for FGCU after pitching the final two innings for the Eagles.

Belmont started the scoring in the top of the second inning with a single to left field by freshman Matt Zeblo (Raleigh, N.C.) scoring junior Derek Wiley (Dublin, Calif.).

FGCU tied the score in the bottom of the fourth inning on a double to right field by Jason Peacock which scored Stephen Rassel.

The Bruins took a 2-1 lead on a suicide squeeze by Zeblo in the top of the sixth inning which scored Wiley from third base.

The Eagles were able to tie the scored at 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Belmont took the lead in the top of the eighth inning off of a solo home run to center field by freshman Nate Woods (Cedar Rapids, Iowa), his second of the season.

Belmont scored the next two runs in the top of the ninth inning on an RBI double to left field by freshman Brian Taylor (Centertown, Ky.) which scored freshman Derek Hamblen (Plano, Texas) and sophomore Packy Elkins (Raleigh, N.C.) The next run came on a sacrifice fly to left field by Wagner, scoring junior Brandon McCall (Spring Hill, Tenn.). Wiley finished with three hits, two runs scored and an RBI in the contest.

The Eagles won the game in the bottom of the 10th inning with a single to left field by Wickens which scored Peacock.

Junior Carlo Testa (Tallmadge, Ohio) got the start for Belmont and went 8.1 innings for the no decision. He gave up six runs on 10 hits and had six strikeouts in the contest.

Richard Bleier started the game for FGCU and went eight full innings and gave up three runs, nine hits and had four strikeouts.

Game 2

The Eagles completed their sweep of Belmont in the doubleheader with a 9-2 victory in the nightcap.

Junior Brian Kelley (Ormond Beach, Fla.) started the game

The Eagles scored four runs in the bottom of the second inning to take the early 4-0 lead.

FGCU continued the offensive pressure with a run in the bottom of the third inning.

Belmont scored their first run of the game in the top of the fifth inning on an RBI sacrifice fly to left field by McCall, scoring freshman Vinny Casha (Nashville, Tenn.).

The Bruins continued the comeback with another run in the top of the sixth inning with an RBI single to third base by Woods which scored sophomore Daniel Wagner (China Grove, N.C.).

The Eagles placed the game out of reach with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and a run in the eighth.

The two teams will conclude their series on Apr. 5 beginning at 11 a.m. ET.
