MYERS, Fla. – The Belmont baseball team (9-20, 6-12 Atlantic Sun)
snapped its’ 10-game losing streak with an impressive 12-5 victory
over Florida Gulf Coast (25-8, 15-3 A-Sun) at Swanson Stadium in Ft. Myers,
Fla. on Saturday.
Senior Josh Moffitt (Goodlettsville, Tenn.) got his first win of the
season after going 5.2 innings and notching three strikeouts. Moffitt
(1-4) earned the start and gave up three earned runs on nine hits.
Freshman Nate Woods (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) earned his first career save
after pitching the final 3.1 innings for the Bruins. He gave up no runs
on two hits and had three strikeouts.
Richie Erath started the game for FGCU and got the loss. He (2-1) gave
up five runs, all earned, over 2.1 innings with five hits and three strikeouts.
The Bruins got the scoring started with two runs in the top of the second
inning. The first run came on a solo home run to left field by junior
Daniel Wagner (Dublin, Calif.), his sixth of the season. The homerun was
also the 30th of his career, which is second all-time in Belmont history.
The leader is Wilson Tucker with 32 and he played for the Bruins from
2004-07. The second run came on a ground out to the shortstop by freshman
Matt Zeblo (Raleigh, N.C.) which scored sophomore Daniel Wagner (China
Grove, N.C.)
The Eagles responded with a run in the top of the second inning to cut
the lead in half to make the score 2-1 in favor of Belmont.
Belmont increased their lead in the top of the third inning with three
runs to take a 5-1 lead. The first run came on a triple to right center
by junior Brandon McCall (Spring Hill, Tenn.) scoring freshman Derek Hamblen
(Plano, Texas). The Bruins scored another run in the inning on a single
to right field by junior Carlo Testa (Tallmadge, Ohio) scoring McCall.
The next run came on a single to right field by Wagner which scored Testa.
Belmont continued the offensive pressure with three runs in the top of
the fifth inning. The highlight of the inning was a two-RBI single to
center by Hamblen which scored freshman Brian Taylor (Centertown, Ky.)
and Zeblo.
FGCU scored two runs each in the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings
to make the score 8-5 in favor of Belmont.
Belmont tacked on four more runs in the top of the ninth inning starting
with a solo home run to left field by Wagner, his first of the season.
The next two runs came on an RBI single to right field by sophomore Mark
Noth (Burr Ridge, Ill.) which scored Wagner and Taylor. Hamblen’s
double down the left field line scored Noth for the next run.
Elkins and Wagner each finished with three hits.
The Bruins will return to action against Lambuth at Greer Stadium in
Nashville, Tenn. on Apr. 8 starting at 6 p.m.
