Belmont Baseball Splits Doubleheader at Kennesaw State
 
GAME DAY CENTRAL

KENNESAW, Ga. – The Belmont baseball team split its’ doubleheader against Kennesaw State at Stillwell Stadium in Kennesaw, Ga. on Mar. 21. Here’s the recap of each game:

Game 1

Belmont’s two runs in the top of the 10th inning propelled the Bruins to a 6-5 victory over Kennesaw, Ga. on Saturday afternoon at Stillwell Stadium in Kennesaw, Ga.

The win improved Belmont to 8-11 overall and 5-6 in the conference while Kennesaw State dropped to 7-13 and 4-4 in the A-Sun.

Freshman Dane Swinehart (Lancaster, Ohio) pitched one full inning to earn the win for Belmont. His record for the season is now 2-1.

Junior Chris Manning (Nashville, Tenn.) pitched the bottom of the 10th inning to earn his third save of the season.

Michael Bohana pitched the final 2.2 innings for Kennesaw State and gave up three runs and three hits with two strikeouts for the loss. His record is now 0-2.

Kennesaw scored the first two runs of the game in the bottom of the first inning off of a two-RBI double to right center by Jay Morrow, scoring Martin Baker and Ric Bishop.

Belmont responded with two runs in the top of the third inning. The first run came off a sacrifice fly to left field by junior Carlo Testa, scoring sophomore Packy Elkins (Raleigh, N.C.). The second run came on a single to right center by freshman Bryan Taylor (Centertown, Ky.) which scored freshman Derek Hamblen (Plano, Texas).

The Owls took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning with a solo home run to right field by Bishop.

The Bruins tied the score in the bottom of the seventh inning with a solo home run by Elkins to right center, his first of the season.

Kennesaw State scored a run in the bottom of the seventh to take a 4-3 lead.

Belmont tied the game in the top of the ninth inning with a sacrifice fly to center field by pinch hitter, freshman Vinny Casha (Nashville, Tenn.), scoring Elkins.

The Bruins took the lead in the top of the 10th inning with two runs to take a 6-4 lead.

Kennesaw State cut the lead to 6-5 with Bishop’s second solo home run of the day to right field.

Game 2

Belmont dropped the second game of the doubleheader against Kennesaw State, 4-2.

The win dropped Belmont to 8-12 overall and 5-7 in the conference while Kennesaw State improved to 8-13 and 5-4 in the A-Sun.

Justin Freeman pitched a complete game for the Owls and gave up two runs with eight hits and 13 strikeouts in the contest. His record for the season is now 2-2.

Senior Josh Moffitt (Goodlettville, Tenn.) pitched 4.2 innings in the contest and had three strikeouts while giving up three hits and four runs. His record is now 0-3.

Belmont scored the first run of the game in the top of the first inning through a single to right center by junior Brandon McCall (Spring Hill, Tenn.), scoring Testa.

The Bruins continued the offensive pressure with a run in the top of the second inning with a single to left center by freshman Vinny Casha, scoring sophomore Packy Elkins (Raleigh, N.C.).

Kennesaw State cut the lead in half with a solo home run to left field by Jerome Wooley in the bottom of the third inning.

The Owls scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning highlighted by a two-run double to left by Ric Bishop which scored Jerome Wooley and Jabob Robbins. Kennesaw State took a 4-2 lead that they will not relinquish.

The Bruins will return to action on Mar. 25 at Vanderbilt in Nashville, Tenn. starting at 6 p.m.
