NASHVILLE,
Tenn. – Junior Derek Wiley’s (Dublin, Calif.) triple to right
center in the bottom of the ninth scoring freshman Bryan Taylor (Centertown,
Ky.) was the game-winner, as the Bruins snapped their five game losing
streak with a dramatic 13-12 victory over North Florida at Greer Stadium
on Friday.
The win improves Belmont to 5-9 overall and 2-5 in the Atlantic Sun,
while the loss drops North Florida to 8-6 and 3-4 in the A-Sun.
Junior Chris Manning pitched one full inning and gave up one hit to earn
the victory for the Bruins. His record for the season now stands at 1-1.
Tyler Stohr gave up five runs over 1.1 innings of work with three hits
to get the loss. His record is also 1-1.
Belmont set season highs in runs scored (13), hits (16), RBIs (11) and
walks (8) on the offensive side of the plate.
Junior Carlo Testa (Tallmadge, Ohio) had a career-high and unofficial
Belmont-record five steals in the contest along with extending his career-long
hitting streak to 17 games. Testa also set a career-high in runs scored
in a game with four.
Taylor set a career-high in hits in a game with three. Fellow freshman
Nate Woods (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) set career-highs in hits (4) and runs
scored (3)
Junior Brian Kelley (Ormond Beach, Fla.) started the game for Belmont
and pitched three innings and gave up six runs with seven hits and had
three strikeouts.
John Raiford earned the start for North Florida and went 4.2 innings
with five runs, all earned, and gave up eight hits to go along with three
strikeouts.
North Florida started the scoring in the top of the first inning with
one run through a double to right center by Travis Martin, scoring T.J.
Thompson.
Belmont responded with two runs in the bottom of the first courtesy of
an RBI single to centerfield by Taylor, scoring Testa and junior Brandon
McCall (Spring Hill, Tenn.).
The Ospreys scored four runs in the top of the second inning to take
a 5-2 lead. North Florida extended the lead with a single to left field
by Chad Knight scored Andy Warren.
The Bruins cut the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning with two runs,
which was highlighted by a single to third base by McCall, scoring Testa.
North Florida continued the offensive pressure with a run in the top
of the sixth inning to make the score 7-5, but Belmont responded with
a run of their own in the bottom of the sixth inning with another single
by McCall, this one to right center, scoring Testa again.
The Ospreys scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning which
was highlighted by a two-run home run to right center by Martin, scoring
Preston Hale and Mike Smith. The score stood 10-6 in favor of the Ospreys.
The Bruins continued their efforts with two runs in the bottom of the
seventh inning. The first run came through a double to left field by freshman
Derek Hamblen (Plano, Texas), scoring freshman Vinny Casha (Nashville,
Tenn.). The second run came on a sacrifice fly to right field by sophomore
Daniel Wagner (China Grove, N.C.), scoring Woods.
North Florida scored a run in the top of the eighth inning to make the
score 11-8, but Belmont scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth to
take the lead, 12-11. Taylor had a groundout to the shortstop that scored
Testa for the first run. The second run came on a single to left field
by Woods, scoring Wiley. Wagner was then hit by a pitch with the bases
loaded to score sophomore Ryan Kincherlow (Antioch, Tenn.) to tie the
game. The Bruins finally took the lead with a bases loaded walk by sophomore
Packy Elkins (Raleigh, N.C.) scoring Woods.
The Ospreys were able to tie the game in the top of the ninth, but Wiley’s
game-winning triple sealed the victory for the Bruins.
“I thought tonight’s effort was great and we showed excellent
resiliency throughout the game,” said Belmont head coach Dave Jarvis.
“We got major production from the bottom of our lineup today, especially
from Woods, and the middle of our order gave us positive results as well.”
North Florida now holds a lifetime series lead over Belmont at 4-3. Jarvis
is also now 4-3 lifetime against the Ospreys.
Belmont will return to action on Mar. 15 against North Florida, at Greer
Stadium as part of a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
