Nashville,
TENN. – Two RBIs by junior Brandon McCall wasn’t enough to
lift the Belmont baseball team as the Bruins dropped their contest against
Tennessee Tech, 13-3, at Greer Stadium in Nashville, Tenn. on Tuesday
evening.
The loss drops Belmont’s record to 15-24 overall while Tennessee
Tech improved to 27-13-1.
Freshman Dane Swinehart started the game for Belmont and went 5.1 innings,
giving up five earned runs and nine hits. He (2-3) had one strikeout and
one walk in the contest.
Ryan Dennick (3-0) earned the win for the Golden Eagles after pitching
five full innings and giving up one run on four hits with two strikeouts
and two walks.
Sophomore Packy Elkins’ (Raleigh, N.C.) career-long hitting streak
ended at 13 games in the contest.
Tennessee Tech scored the first run of the contest on a groundout to
first base by Chad Oberacker which scored Jake New.
The Golden Eagles increased the lead to 3-0 with two runs in the top
of the second inning with the first run coming on a double down the right
field line by Matt Mihoci which scored Evan Webb.
Belmont mounted a comeback in the bottom of the fifth inning to score
their first run of the game to make the score 3-1 in favor of Tennessee
Tech. The run came on a sacrifice fly to right field by freshman Derek
Hamblen (Plano, Texas) scoring freshman Matt Zeblo (Raleigh, N.C.).
The Golden Eagles answered with three runs in the top of the sixth inning
and a run in the top of the seventh inning to make the score 7-1.
Belmont scored its final two runs of the game in the bottom of the seventh
inning on a two-RBI triple to right center by McCall which scored Hamblen
and Zeblo.
The freshman catcher also had a career-high three hits in the game.
Tennessee Tech finished the scoring for the game with five runs in the
top of the eighth inning and one run in the top of the ninth.
The Bruins will return to action against Vanderbilt on Apr. 23 at Greer
Stadium in Nashville, Tenn. starting at 6 p.m.
