NASHVILLE,
Tenn. – Junior Derek Wiley’s (Dublin, Calif.) fourth homerun
of the season wasn’t enough to lift Belmont as the Bruins dropped
its contest to Vanderbilt, 7-3, at Hawkins Field in Nashville, Tenn. on
Tuesday.
The loss drops Belmont to 8-13 overall, while Vanderbilt improves to
15-6.
Vanderbilt now leads the lifetime series over Belmont, 37-11.
Freshman Nate Woods (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) started the game for Belmont
and went two full innings and gave up two earned runs, two hits and notched
two strikeouts. He earned the loss and his record for the season is now
0-1.
Brett Jacobson earned the start for Vanderbilt and went seven full inning
to earn the win. In the contest, he gave up seven hits, three earned runs
and four strikeouts. His record is now 1-2.
Brett Hayes pitched the final two innings for the Commodores and earned
his first save of the season.
Vanderbilt scored the first two runs of the game in the bottom of the
first inning to take a 2-0 lead.
The Bruins tied the score in the top of the second inning with a two-run
home run to centerfield by Wiley. Junior Brandon McCall (Spring Hill,
Tenn.) was on base and scored the other run.
The Commodores retook the lead in the bottom of the second inning with
a two-run home run to center by Ryan Flaherty.
Belmont cut the lead in half with an RBI single to center by junior Carlo
Testa (Tallmadge, Ohio) scoring sophomore Daniel Wagner (China Grove,
N.C.).
Vanderbilt extended the lead to 5-3 with a solo home run to left center
by Dominic de la Osa in the bottom of the seventh inning.
The Commodores scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning that
was highlighted by a double down the left field line by Steven Little,
scoring Alex Feinberg.
The Bruins will return to action on Mar. 28 against Atlantic Sun foe,
Gardner-Webb, at Greer Stadium in Nashville, Tenn. starting at 3 p.m.
