Nashville,
TENN. – Two RBIs from sophomore Daniel Wagner (China Grove, N.C.)
and junior Brandon McCall (Spring Hill, N.C.) wasn’t enough to lift
the Belmont baseball team as the Bruins dropped its game against No. 10
Vanderbilt, 10-7, on Wednesday evening at Greer Stadium in Nashville,
Tenn.
The loss drops Belmont to 15-26 overall while Vanderbilt improves to
30-11.
Senior Chris Manning (Nashville, Tenn.) earned the loss for Belmont after
going 0.2 innings and giving up three runs. His record is now 1-4 on the
season.
Steven Schwartz (2-0) pitched two full innings and gave up one run on
two hits with three strikeouts to pick up the win for the Commodores.
Brett Jacobson got the final four outs for Vanderbilt to pick up his
second save of the season.
The Bruins scored the first run of the game on a double to right center
by Wagner which scored junior Carlo Testa (Tallmadge, Ohio) in the first
inning.
Belmont scored two more runs to take a 3-0 lead in the second inning
with a double to right center by McCall which plated sophomore Packy Elkins
(Raleigh, N.C.) and freshman Vinny Casha (Nashville, Tenn.).
However, Vanderbilt would respond with a run in the top of the third
inning on a single to center field by David Macias which scored Jordan
Wormsley.
The Commodores continued to cut the deficit with another run in the fifth
inning to make the score 3-2.
The Bruins responded with a run in the same inning on a double to right
field by Casha which scored freshman Nate Woods (Cedar Rapids, Iowa).
Vanderbilt took it first lead of the game with four runs in the top of
the sixth inning on a grand slam to left field by Andrew Giobbi to give
the Commodores the 6-4 lead.
Belmont continued to show fight and tied the score at 6-6 with two runs
in the sixth which was highlighted by a single to third base by Wagner
which scored Testa.
The Commodores took their final lead of the game in the top of the seventh
with three more runs and another run in the eighth.
Belmont scored its final run of the game in bottom of the eighth inning
on a double to left field by junior Derek Wiley (Dublin, Calif.) which
scored Testa, who finished the game with four walks and three runs scored.
Freshman Tyler Graskewicz (Hudson, Wisc.) started the game for the Bruins
and went five strong innings and gave up only four hits and two runs in
the contest for the no-decision.
Taylor Hill earned the start for Vanderbilt and went 3.2 innings and
gave up three runs on three hits and five walks for his no-decision.
Wiley also had two hits in the contest.
The Bruins will return to action against USC Upstate on Apr. 25 at Greer
Stadium in Nashville, Tenn. starting at 3 p.m.
