MEN’S GOLF 12TH AFTER DAY ONE OF BELMONT FALL SHOOTOUT

BRENTWOOD, TENN. - - Belmont University men’s golf stands 12th after day one as host of the Belmont Fall Shootout.

Venturing away from their traditional home course of Old Natchez Country Club, the Bruins were unable to solve the 7,043 yard Par 72 Nashville Golf & Athletic Club layout.

Sophomore Simon Marshall (North Yorkshire, England) led the Bruins with rounds of 76-71=147 (+3) to stand T-18. Sophomore Scott O’Brien (Brookings, S.D.) carded rounds of 78-74=152 (+8) for T-39 after day one.

Sophomore Stuart Ashwood (Northampton, England) shot 81-77=158 (+14) and is T-58. Junior Danny Amundson (Sioux Falls, S.D) is 62nd after shooting 81-79=160 (+16). Freshman Robby McNiff (Muskegon, Mich.) came in with scores of 89-74=163 (+19) to place 64th.

Competing as an individual, sophomore Bryn Rocke (Durban, South Africa) stands T-23 following rounds of 72-76=148 (+4). Freshman Dan Smith (Bournemouth, England) is T-43 at 82-71=153 (+9). Senior Patrick Kelly (Lexington, Ky.) stands 67th after rounds of 89-82=171 (+27). Sophomore Gaylon Cude (Centerville, Tenn.) is 68th at 89-84=173 (+29).

Strangely, benign morning conditions yielded not a single sub-70 round on the day. Yet in the afternoon, as winds freshened, scores fell – 18 under par rounds in all.

Akron leads the team competition at 576 (E), while Craig Voorhees of Miami (OH) stands atop the individual leaderboard at 71-67=138 (-6).

Final round play is scheduled for Tuesday morning.
