NASHVILLE, TENN. - - Billy Henry has been
appointed interim head coach for men’s golf, as announced by Belmont
Director of Athletics Mike Strickland Monday.
Henry has over four decades of distinguished service in intercollegiate
athletics, both as a coach and administrator. His career began in 1964,
where he served as basketball coach and athletic director at Union University
in Jackson, Tenn.
From there he spent seven more years on the hardwood sidelines, first
as an assistant at the University of Florida and later as head coach of
Baptist College Charleston (SC).
In 1976, Henry accepted a position as athletic director of Maryville
College. In fact, Henry hired Belmont men’s basketball head coach
Rick Byrd to his first head coaching position at Maryville in 1978.
After four years at Austin Peay, Henry moved on the University of Tennessee,
retiring in 2005 following two decades as assistant athletic director.
A native of Calhoun, Tenn., Henry played basketball and baseball at Carson
Newman before earning his undergraduate degree in 1959. He went on to
earn a master’s degree from the University of Tennessee in 1962.
Henry is a member of the Lenoir City High School Sports Hall of Fame.
“Billy’s credentials speak for themselves and we are honored
to have him join our athletic department staff,” Strickland said.
“His experience, integrity, and good nature will enhance our golf
program.”
Henry replaces former head coach Brian Costello.
Belmont men’s golf returns to action October 15-16 when it hosts
the Belmont Fall Shootout at Nashville Golf & Athletic Club.
