DICKSON,
TENN. - - Sophomore Scott O’Brien (Brookings, S.D.) delivered the
highlight of the spring season Tuesday, earning individual medalist honors
as Belmont University men’s golf placed fifth at the MSU Spring
Invitational.
O’Brien entered Tuesday’s final round three strokes off the
pace after carding rounds of 69 and 71 Monday. But the 6,858 yard Par
72 Greystone Golf Course layout was a much sterner test Tuesday with winds
gusting to 25 miles per hour.
As the overnight leaders fell back, O’Brien remained sharp and
steady. His final round of one under par 71 proved good enough for first
place at 211 (-5).
O’Brien’s previous best finish was a T-7 at last year’s
Belmont Intercollegiate.
Not to be outdone, junior Danny Amundson (Sioux Falls, S.D.) also tied
the bow on a fine week, closing in 73 to finish T-6 at 215 (-1). Sophomore
Stuart Ashwood (Northampton, England) shot a final round 78 to place T-25
at 222 (+6).
Freshman Daniel Smith (Bournemouth, Dorset Co., England) shot a closing
73 to finish T-31 at 224 (+8). Sophomore Gaylon Cude (Centerville, Tenn.)
finished T-41 at 227 (+11) after shooting 78 Tuesday.
Competing as an individual, sophomore Simon Marshall (North Yorkshire,
England) finished an impressive T-10 at level par 216. Senior Patrick
Kelly (Lexington, Ky.) placed T-47 at 232 (+16) after posting a closing
79.
As a team, the Bruins closed in seven over par 295 to finish the 54-hole
event at 870 (+6). But speaking to the competitive nature of the tournament,
Belmont finished just six strokes behind team champion Lipscomb.
Belmont returns to action Apr. 21-23 in the Atlantic Sun Championship
in Braselton, Ga.
