SPRINGFIELD,
LA. - - Belmont men's golf completed a tough week late Tuesday, placing
14th in the Carter Plantation Intercollegiate hosted by Southeastern Louisiana
University.
The Bruins simply could not solve the 7,049 yard Par 72 Carter Plantation
layout, a pristine layout laden with hazards at every turn. Cool temperatures
and gusty winds also reaked havoc, but Belmont simply did not bring its
A-game.
Belmont's 54-hole total of 951 (309-317-325, +87) was well behind the
lead pack; in fact 70 strokes behind team champion Middle Tennessee State
at 881.
Junior Danny Amundson (Sioux Falls, S.D.) - who entered the final round
among the leaders - shot a final round six over par 78 to finish T-12
(73-75-78=226, +10).
But as was the case the opening two rounds Monday, no Bruin teammate
joined Amundson with consistent play. Sophomore Scott O'Brien (Brookings,
S.D.) shot a final round 80 to place T-44 (77-81-80=238, +22). Sophomore
Stuart Ashwood (Northampton, England) came home in 82 to place T-54 (80-78-82=240,
+24).
Sophomore Simon Marshall (North Yorkshire, England) shot a final round
85 to place 71st (79-84-85=248, +32). Freshman Daniel Smith (Bournemouth,
Dorset Co., England) carded a final round 88 to finish 76th (82-83-88=253,
+37).
Rick Cochran of Middle Tennessee State earned medalist honors with a
54-hole total of 215 (-1).
Belmont returns to the links March 31 in the Larry Nelson Collegiate
Invitational hosted by Kennesaw State.
