JACKSON,
TENN. - - Enduring virtually everything Mother Nature could throw at them,
Belmont men's golf placed seventh out of 16 participating teams in the
weather-shortened Grover Page Classic hosted by UT-Martin.
Following Monday's opening rounds which featured multiple weather delays
and ultimately stoppage due to darkness, Belmont battled through frigid
temperatures and periodic snow flurries to grind out fine scores on the
6,783 yard Par 72 Jackson Country Club layout.
The Bruins were led by sophomore Stuart Ashwood (Northampton, England)
who closed in even par 72 to finish T-12 at 148 (+4, 76-72). Ashwood was
one of 10 players in the field of 90 to shoot par or better on Tuesday.
Fellow Englishman Simon Marshall (North Yorkshire, England) finished
closely behind at T-22 following rounds of 72-77 (+5, 149). Junior Danny
Amundson (Sioux Falls, S.D.) placed T-30 at 151 (+7) after carding rounds
of 77-74.
Freshman Daniel Smith (Bournemouth, Dorset Co., England) also finished
T-30 at 151(+7) with rounds of 77-74.
Sophomore Scott O'Brien (Brookings, S.D.) came in T-52 at 156 (+12) with
rounds of 74-82.
Competing as an individual, sophomore Gaylon Cude (Centerville, Tenn.)
placed T-41 at 154 (+10) following rounds of 78-76.
Only four teams were better than the Bruins' Tuesday team total of 297
(+9).
Belmont's 36-hole total of 596 (+20) was 12 strokes behind overall team
champion, Central Arkansas.
Cory Parkinson of Lipscomb University earned medalist honors at 140 (-4,
69-71).
Belmont returns to play this weekend at the Tusculum Invitational.
