PENSACOLA,
FLA. - - Belmont University men’s golf teed off its 2008 spring
season in the Sunshine State, placing eighth Tuesday in the Argonaut Invitational
hosted by the University of West Florida.
Belmont got several fine individual performances over the two day event,
but simply was unable to make much collective headway. On the 6,815 yard
Par 72 Pensacola Country Club layout, the Bruins shot a final round 11
over par total of 299 to complete the 54-hole event at 35 over par 899.
Individually, Belmont was led by junior Danny Amundson (Sioux Falls,
S.D.), whose rounds of 71-76-75=222 (+6) placed him T-24. Freshman Daniel
Smith (Bournemouth, Dorset Co., England) fired rounds of 77-74-74=225
(+9) to finish 33rd.
Sophomore Scott O’Brien (Brookings, S.D.) carded rounds of 76-72-79=227
(+11) to place T-36. Sophomore Simon Marshall (North Yorkshire, England)
finished in style with a closing one under par 71 to place 44th (74-85-71=230,
+14).
Sophomore Gaylon Cude (Centerville, Tenn.) shot rounds of 74-81-83=238
(+22) to come in T-53.
Playing as an individual participant, sophomore Stuart Ashwood (Northampton,
England) finished T-45 with rounds of 78-76-78=232 (+16).
Host West Florida won the team title at 847 (-17), while Scott Langley
of the University of Illinois took home medalist honors at 208 (-8).
Belmont returns to action Mar. 3-4 in the Grover Page Classic hosted
by UT-Martin.
