MEN’S GOLF LOSES CHALLENGE MATCH AT AUSTIN PEAY

CLARKSVILLE, TENN. - - The Belmont University men’s golf team opened the 2007 spring season with a narrow loss in a head-to-head challenge match at Austin Peay Saturday.

Admist chilly conditions at the 6,419 yard Par 71 Swan Lake Golf Course layout, Belmont and Austin Peay played their entire rosters and took the lowest five scores from each team to determine a winner.

Austin Peay recorded a team total of 367 (+12) while the Bruins came in at 372 (+17). Leading Belmont was senior Jeff Lanier (Austin, Texas) with a one over par 72. Lanier finished the fall season as the 31st ranked golfer in the nation.

Junior Patrick Kelly (Lexington, Ky.) shot a two over par 73, while junior Danny Amundson (Sioux Falls, S.D.) carded a three over par 74.

Rounding out the Bruin scoring: freshman Byrn Rocke (Durban, South Africa) 76, sophomore Scott O'Brien (Brookings, S.D.) 77, senior Kevin Burrell (Nashville, Tenn.) 78, freshman Gaylon Cude (Centerville, Tenn.) 81, freshman Simon Marshall (North Yorkshire, England) 82.

Austin Peay’s Yoshio Yamamoto earned medalist honors with an even par round of 71.

The Bruins’ first full-field event of the spring is this weekend at the Rice Intercollegiate in Houston, Texas.
