BELMONT MEN’S SOCCER DROPS HEARTBREAKER TO CAMPBELL, 2-1, IN OVERTIME |

The loss drops Belmont to 3-6-2 overall and 0-3-1 in the Atlantic Sun, while Campbell improves to 7-3-1 and 3-1-1 in conference play. The Bruins played aggressively from the start and almost took the lead in the 21st minute as sophomore Wade Wonderlin sent a blistering shot towards net but Campbell’s Aaron Johnson made a diving save to prevent the score. Belmont finally notched the first goal of the match through Mooneyhan, who tallied his team-high fifth goal of the season. He netted home a centering pass toward the middle of the penalty box from junior Mete Ozkan, who received credit for the assist. The Camels responded with a goal of their own in the first half as Khalil Johnson placed a shot past Belmont’s Ron Gravely after a scramble in the penalty box to tie the score in the 34th minute. Belmont outshot Campbell in the first half, 5-3, and attempted more corner kicks, 4-2. Belmont continued to attack Campbell in the second half and nearly took the lead in the 66th minute when junior Navarda Heath attempted a shot that was saved by Aaron Johnson, but the rebound went to the left side of the box and junior Mete Ozkan tapped his shot past the goalkeeper but the ball hit the post and went out of bounds. Belmont attempted more shots in regulation, 11-4, and more corner kicks, 7-2. There were no more corner kicks in the match. The game went into overtime and Richard Jata took a free kick just outside of the penalty area on the right side of the goal and placed it in for the game-winner in the 100th minute at the 99:36 mark. Belmont outshot Campbell, 12-5, overall in the match. Aaron Johnson made four saves in the match for the win. Gravely made two saves for the Bruins in the match. The Bruins will return to action on Oct. 13 at the Whitten Soccer Complex
against Mercer beginning at 2:00 p.m.
