BRUINS CONCLUDE ATLANTIC SUN SLATE WITH TWO HOME MATCHES

NASHVILLE, TENN. - - The Belmont men’s soccer team (5-7-2, 2-4-1 Atlantic Sun) will conclude its Atlantic Sun slate for the season with two home matches against teams from Jacksonville, Fla.

Belmont will first face North Florida (6-7-0, 4-3-0 Atlantic Sun) at the Whitten Soccer Complex in Nashville, Tenn. on Oct. 26 beginning at 6:30 p.m.

The Bruins will then meet Jacksonville at home on Oct. 28 beginning at 1 p.m. This match has been designated “Senior Day” and all Belmont senior players will be honored prior to the match.

SERIES HISTORY

Belmont holds a 2-0 series lead over North Florida. Senior Ian Schinelli had a two-point game in last year’s match with one goal and one assist in Belmont’s 2-0 victory over the Ospreys at North Florida on Oct. 14, 2006. Senior Jay Ayres and sophomore Justin Hay also had assists in the contest.

Jacksonville holds a 5-1-1 series advantage over Belmont. The Dolphins shut out the Bruins, 1-0, at the Atlantic Sun Tournament last season on Nov. 2, 206, ending Belmont’s season. In the teams’ last regular season meeting on Oct. 12, 2006 at Jacksonville, Schinelli had another two-point game with a goal and an assist in Belmont’s 2-0 victory. Junior Mete Ozkan had two assists in the contest.

LAST WEEK

Belmont dropped its match against Stetson, 2-0, at the Stetson Soccer Complex in DeLand, Fla. on Oct. 19.

Senior Derrick Henry paced the Bruins with two shots. Senior Justin Mooneyhan, junior Bo Konigsmark and sophomore Wade Wonderlin each attempted one shot in the match.

Junior Navarda Heath’s goal in the 77th minute lifted the Belmont men’s soccer team to a 1-0 shutout over Florida Gulf Coast at North Collier Regional Park in Naples, Fla. on Oct. 21.

Heath scored his second goal of the season off a rebound in front of the net for the game-winner. Sophomore Wade Wonderlin received credit for the assist, his team-leading third of the season.

Sophomore Ron Gravely made four saves in the match for his league-leading fifth shutout of the season for the win.

GRAVELY NAMED ATLANTIC SUN DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Ron Gravely was named the defensive player of the week for Oct. 22, it was announced on Monday.

The sophomore psychology major from Dallas recorded his conference-leading fifth shutout of the season in Belmont’s 1-0 victory at Florida Gulf Coast in Ft. Myers, Fla. on Oct. 21, with four saves. His five shutouts this season is tied for second all-time in Belmont history. Gravely is currently tied with current graduate assistant coach Kyle Roelke, who had five shutouts last season. Matt Renfrow holds the all-time record with six shutouts in the 2003 season. This is Gravely’s first honor from the Atlantic Sun.

During this season, Ron Gravely a goalless streak of 254:39, which extended through two complete matches. The first goal he allowed was in Belmont’s 2-1 double overtime victory over Central Arkansas on Sept. 21 and the last goal was not conceded until the Bruins’ match against Gardner-Webb on Oct. 5.
