City, Tenn. – On day one of the Atlantic Sun Conference
Indoor Track and Field Championships held Friday in Johnson City, Tennessee,
the Belmont indoor track and field teams came out strong as they captured
three event titles and finished the day among the top-five in the team
standings.
The Belmont men’s team, who stood in fourth place with 26 points
after day one, won two of the three event titles BU won on Friday and
had several individuals establish new school and conference records. Junior
Kipskogei Magut, the reigning A-Sun 1500 and 5000 meter outdoor champion,
won the 3000 meters title with a conference and school record time of
8:35.60. Three other Bruins finished among the top-seven in that event
as Caleb Swartz placed fourth, John Brigham finished sixth and Kip Hill
placed seventh. BU’s distance medley team of Ben McGlothlin, Clint
Hamm, Hillary Cheruiyot, and Jacob Buckman won the A-Sun distance medley
title with a conference record time of 10:21.17. In addition, Channing
Twyner was the top qualifier in the 60 meters with a school record time
of 6.92 (the final will be held Saturday), while freshman Joe Frye set
a new Belmont record in the shot put with his sixth place mark of 46 feet,
6.75 inches.
The Belmont women’s squad stands in fifth place after day one with
18 points. Junior Lauren Williams won the conference’s 3000 meter
title with a time of 9:52.64, beating out 12 other competitors. It was
Williams’ first A-Sun indoor title. The distance medley team of
Brittany Thune, Britney Green, Mollie Schlarman, and Megan Saunders placed
second with a school record time of 12:26.52. In addition, two Bruins
qualified for the finals in their respective events. Sophomore Lizz Pollock
qualified third for Saturday’s 60 meter hurdle final with a time
of 9.15, while fellow sophomore Lynette Rives qualified fifth for Saturday’s
60 meter final with a time of 9.15.
