TRACK TEAMS FINISH TIED FOR SECOND AT THE A-SUN INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS; HILLARY CHERUIYOT NAMED MOST OUTSTANDING TRACK PERFORMER

Johnson City, Tenn. – The Belmont men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams made history on Saturday as they posted their highest finish at an A-Sun indoor or outdoor championship as they both finished tied for second at this weekend’s A-Sun Indoor Track and Field Championships held in Johnson City, Tennessee.

On day two of the conference meet, both teams saw individuals captured a total of five events as well as 20 top-five finishes.

The Belmont men’s team finished tied for second place in the team standings with Gardner-Webb, just 13 points behind conference champion ETSU. The Bruins won four events and posted 12 top-five finishes. Freshman Hillary Cheruiyot (pictured left) won the mile run with a conference record time of 4:20.70. He also finished second in the 800 meters with a time of 1:57.81. For his efforts, Hillary was named A-Sun Co-Most Outstanding Track Performer and Most Outstanding Freshman Performer. Senior Channing Twyner won his first A-Sun individual title with his victory in the 60 meters with a school record time of 6.90. Junior John Brigham won the 5000 meters title with a conference record time of 14:56.62. Belmont’s 4x400 meter relay team of Clint Hamm, Taylor Hart, Stephen Register, and David Bergfeld picked up their first conference title as they won their event with a school record time of 3:24.70. Hamm’s day did not finish with that race. The junior placed second in the 200 meters with a time of 22.34 and then he placed third in the 400 meters with a time of 50.60, which tied the school record in that event.

On the women’s side, Belmont finished tied for second place with ETSU with 81 points, 69 behind A-Sun women’s champion Jacksonville. The Bruins won one event on day two and posted eight top-fives. Belmont’s 4x400 meter relay team of Lizz Pollock, Kahlai Turner, Lynette Rives, and Jessica Giles won their first A-Sun indoor title as set a new conference and school record with a time of 3:49.44. Sophomore Lynette Rives had another great championship as she placed second twice and set two new school records.

The Clarksville, Tennessee native placed second in both the 60 meters with a school record time of 7.59 and 200 meters with a school record time of 24.38. Sophomore Lizz Pollock finished third in both the 60 meter hurdles and 400 meters. Junior Lauren Williams followed her 3000 meter title with a second place finish in the mile, while junior Christa Coppin placed second in the pole vault with a mark of 10 feet, six inches, which ties the school record set by her earlier this season.

In total for the championships, Belmont captured a total of eight individual titles (six men, two women) and 19 All-Conference awards (11 men, eight women).
