Nashville,
Tenn. – The Belmont men’s and women’s indoor
track and field teams are finishing up preparations to head for Johnson
City, Tennessee for the 2007 Atlantic Sun Indoor Track and Field Championships
held Friday-Saturday at East Tennessee State University.
The Belmont women’s team enters this week’s championships
with a lot of confidence. Several Bruins are near the top of the A-Sun
performance list in their respective events, which may bode well for success
at the championships. Sophomore Lynette Rives, who is the reigning A-Sun
400 meter indoor champion, broke three school indoor records this season
and has the A-Sun’s top time in the 60 meters. In addition, the
Clarksville, Tennessee native has the second fastest mark in the 55 meters,
200 meters, and 400 meters and the third best long jump mark in the conference.
Junior Lauren Williams posted the conference’s fastest time in the
mile of 4:56.92at the Indiana Relays, which was also a new Belmont school
record. In addition, freshman Elizabeth Codrington leads the league in
the triple jump after posting a school record mark of 36 feet, 1.25 inches
at the Ed Temple Classic in December.
The men’s squad has also had a successful indoor season as they
prepare for the conference championships. Senior Channing Twyner has the
conference’s top time in the 55 and 60 meters, while Caleb Swartz
has the fastest time in the 3000 meters. In the 400 meters, BU has two
of the top-three times. Clint Hamm ranks first with a time of 50.40, while
defending conference champion Stephen Register is third with a time of
51.33. In addition, three Bruins are in the top-three in the conference
in the mile run, with Kipkosgei Magut ranking first with a time of 4:19.75,
which he posted at the Indiana Relays earlier in the month.
This weekend’s meet will be held all day Friday and Saturday inside
the Memorial Center on the ETSU campus. Updated results can be found on
the Atlantic Sun website at www.atlanticsun.org or through the CFPI Timing
