TRACK TEAMS COMPETE AT THE INDIANA RELAYS; WILLIAMS, BRIGHAM WIN TITLES

Bloomington, Ind. – The Belmont indoor track and field teams were back in competition this weekend at the Indiana Relays hosted by Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana.

The Belmont women’s team posted a total of six top-10 finishes for the weekend and had two athletes set two new school records. Junior Lauren Williams finished first in the mile run out of 47 competitors. She won with a school record time of 4:56.92, which bested the old mark set by Lisa Crampton by over eight seconds. Sophomore Lynette Rives had another fine meet as she placed fourth in the 200 and 400 meters, while junior transfer Christa Coppin set a new school indoor record in the pole vault as she finished eighth with a mark of 10 feet, six inches.

On the men’s side, BU also had six top-10 finishes and had one school record broken. John Brigham (pictured left) finished first out of 26 runners in the 3000 meters open event with a time of 8:41.23. Teammates Kip Hill and Clay Hannah finished right behind Brigham fourth and seventh place respectively. Sophomore Caleb Swartz broke the school record for 3000 meters in the meet’s unseeded 3000 meters with a time of 8:35.70, which broke the old mark set by Kyle McPhee six years ago by nearly four seconds.

Next week, the Belmont men are off, while the women head down I-24 to Murfreesboro for the MTSU Indoor Invitational on Saturday, February 10th.
