JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The men’s track and field team finished
fifth overall at the Atlantic Sun Indoor Championships on the campus of
East Tennessee State in Johnson City, Tenn.
The Bruins were able to win the Men Distance Medley with a time of 10:19.89.
The runners for Belmont were sophomore Hillary Cheruiyot (Eldoret, Kenya),
sophomore Daniel Jones (White Bluff, Tenn.), sophomore Colin Magut (Kitale,
Kenya) and senior Stephen Register (Franklin, Tenn.).
Senior John Brigham (Mobile, Ala.) won the 3000 Meter Run with a time
of 8:30.82. Three consecutive Bruins finished from 7th to 9th. Sophomore
Will Peters (Carmel, Ind.) finished with a time of 8:59.10, sophomore
Clay Hannah (Lebanon, Tenn.) ran a time of 9:00.04 and sophomore Kip Hill
(Liberty, Mo.) finished in 9:01.33.
Brigham also finished second in the 5000 Meter Run, posting a time of
14:54.57. Senior Kevin Stone (Fairfield, Ohio) finished fourth with a
time of 15:03.51. Junior Caleb Schwartz (Radcliff, Ky.) and Peters rounded
out the Bruins in the race, finishing fifth and sixth in the competition
with times of 15:06.19 and 15:06.73.
Magut and Cheruiyot also ran in the 800 Meter competition and finished
second and third with times of 1:55.60 and 1:57.19. Hill finished in 11th,
running in a time of 2:04.08 and freshman Josh Thebeau (Potosi, Mo.) ran
a time of 2:05.55, good enough for 18th place.
Magut continued his excellent A-Sun Championship with a second place
finish in the 1 Mile Run, posting a time of 4:20.79.
Cheruiyot finished seventh with a time of 4:24.49. Jones and Hannah placed
12th and 13th with times of 4:29.61 and 4:30.69.Finally, Thebeau finished
19th, posting a time of 4:36.38.
Register finished fifth in the 400 Meter Dash with a time of 50.98s.
Freshman Brent Buyse (Plano, Texas), also ran in the Dash and placed 11th
with a time of 52.76s.
The team finished fifth in the 4x400 Meter Relay, posting a time of 3:26.36.
The runners representing Belmont were Register, Buyse, Magut and Cheruiyot.
Senior Brandon Grass (Thompsons Station, Tenn.) finished fourth in the
Pole Vault with a clearing height of 4.45m.
Freshman Jameson Elder (Alpharetta, Ga.) participated in the High Jump
and finished sixth with a distance of 1.89m.
Sophomore Joe Frye (Roscommon, Mich.), the reigning A-Sun track and field
male athlete of the week, finished sixth in the Shot Put with a distance
of 14.06m. Freshman Pierce Greenberg (Raleigh, N.C.) placed ninth, throwing
for 13.26m.
Sophomore Matt Fielder (LaGrange, Ill.) finished fourth in the Heptathlon
with 2463 points in the finals. He also participated in the Triple Jump
and finished 10th with a distance of 12.66m.
Frye placed fourth in the Weight Throw with a distance of 16.25m. Greenberg
finished 12th, throwing for 11.62m.
Junior Tyler Howell (Chattanooga, Tenn.) finished eighth in the shot
put with a distance of 13.62m. He also finished third in the weight throw.
HIs distance was 16.34m. Both marks were personal bests.
Kennesaw State won the overall championship with 128 points. Belmont
finished fifth with 76 points.
The team will begin its outdoor season on Mar. 22 at the Austin Peay
Spring Fling in Clarksville, Tenn.
