TRACK AND FIELD TEAMS WIN THREE INDIVIDUAL TITLES AT THE A-SUN CHAMPIONSHIPS

Clermont, Fla. – The Belmont men and women’s track and field teams won three individual titles and posted 17 top-fives at this weekend’s Atlantic Sun Championships held Friday and Saturday in Clermont, Florida.

The Belmont men’s squad placed fifth with a total of 60 points. They finished 134 points behind conference champion Gardner-Webb. The Bruins were led by sophomore distance runner Collin Magut. The native of Kenya was named the championship’s Most Outstanding Track Performer after winning the A-Sun 1500 meter and 5000 meter titles. He is the first Belmont athlete to be honored with this award since Chris Martland won it in 2003.

In addition to Magut’s performance, several other Bruins had solid performances. Belmont’s 4x100 and 4x400 meter relay teams finished second in their respective events, with the 4x100 team posting a school record time of 42.41. Senior Channing Twyner finished third in the 100 meters, while his teammate junior Stephen Register finished fourth in the 400 meters. Sophomore Kevin Stone placed fifth in the 10,000 meters with a time of 32:37.11. Sophomore Brandon Grass posted a fourth place in the pole vault while tying the school record for that event with his mark of 14 feet, 5.25 inches. In the throwing events, BU’s Cornelius Perry placed fifth in the discus and sixth in the javelin, while teammate Eric Scism finished fifth in the hammer.

The women’s team finished eighth overall with a total of 39 points, which was 106 points behind champion Jacksonville. The BU women were led by freshman Lynette Rives. The Clarksville, Tennessee native won the A-Sun title in the 400 meters with a time of 55.25. In addition, she placed third in the long jump and was a member of Belmont’s 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams who finished fourth and second respectively. The 4x400 relay team set a new school record with their time of 3:57.68. Fellow freshman and Clarksville native Lizz Pollock also placed third in the 400 meter hurdles with a school record time of 1:04.16. In addition, sophomore Elizabeth Smothers finished fourth in the 5000 meters with a time of 4:47.02.

Please note that any athlete who finished in the top-three in an event, earned All-Atlantic Sun honors.
