BELMONT SPLITS FINAL MATCHES AT COMCAST LADY VOL CLASSIC

KNOXVILLE, TENN. - - Belmont finished its two-day participation in the Comcast Lady Vol Classic with a victory over Appalachian State in four games, 30-23, 30-22, 21-30 and 30-27, which was proceeded by a defeat by Tennessee in three games, 28-30, 30-32 and 23-30. The Bruins’ current record stands at 4-3.

In the opening match versus Tennessee, Belmont quickly fell behind 6-3 in the first game, but was able to tie the match at 13-13 with a kill by Carly Frazier. Both teams exchanged points throughout the game and the score was even tied at 28-28, before a kill by Tennessee’s Kylie Marshall and a service ace gave the game to the Lady Vols.

The Bruins struggled at the start of the second game and trailed 8-3, but a timeout composed Belmont and a kill by Cat Mundy tied the score at 11-11. An attack error by Tennessee’s Milan Clarke gave Belmont the lead 19-18. Both teams traded points throughout and a kill by Cahill tied the score at 30-30 before two consecutive kills by Tennessee gave the Lady Vols the second game.

Tennessee jumped out to another early lead in the third game and kill by Clarke gave the Lady Vols the lead, 10-4. The Bruins were able to close the lead to 24-20 through a kill by Jaye Schuler, but Tennessee grabbed six of the next nine points for the victory.

Mundy had 17 total kills in the match to lead the Bruin attack. Cahill and Frazier each had 11 and 10 kills respectively. Mundy also lead the team with 10 defensive digs.

In the final match against Appalachian State, the Bruins went on a 7-2 run that was culminated by two errors by the Mountaineers to take a 16-9 lead. Belmont clinched the game with a kill from Frazier to earn the 30-23 victory.

Game two was highly contested and a kill by Nilson gave the Bruins the 14-12 lead. The Bruins continued their excellent play and a kill by Schuler forced Appalachian State to call a timeout and made the score 17-3, in favor of Belmont. The Bruins scored 10 of the last 14 points to secure game two, 30-22.

Appalachian State won game three 30-21, but Belmont was able to win game four, 30-27, behind a match-clinching kill by Cahill.

Mundy and Schuler each had 14 kills to lead the Bruin attack. Frazier contributed 10 kills. Mundy also had a team-high 15 defensive digs, while Brittany Card had 12.

The Bruins will return to action on Sept. 4 against Tennessee State at the Curb Event Center in Nashville, Tenn.
