GA. - - Belmont Volleyball got back on track Saturday afternoon with a
three game victory over Kennesaw State, 30-20, 30-24, 30-21.
The Bruins raced out to a 5-1 lead on consecutive aces from junior Cat
Mundy (Dallas, Texas). The edge grew to 12-2 on a kill from freshman Carly
Frazier (Stillwater, Okla.). Senior Jaye Schuler (Lexington, Ill) and
freshman Kayla Albritton (Gainesville, Fla.) helped Belmont stay in control,
winning 30-20.
BU scored the first four points of game two on the serve of senior Colleen
Nilson (McHenry, Ill.). Kennesaw State rallied to square the score, 14-14,
before Belmont reclaimed command. Two straight kills from Mundy and junior
Emily Cahill (Lakeside Park, Ky.) gave the Bruins a 21-16 advantage.
Three more kills from Mundy and two from Albritton closed out the game.
Behind more forceful hitting from Mundy and a block from sophomore Jenny
Gray (Greenwood, Ind.), Belmont opened up game three 5-0. The Owls got
within one, 9-8, before Gray and Frazier scored to end the run.
After an ace from senior Brittany Card (Carlinville, Ill.), Schuler score
three points in succession to stretch the margin to 22-17. Kills from
Mundy and Gray helped the Bruins win in straights.
Belmont outhit Kennesaw State, .250 to .034 - .034 representing the lowest
hitting percentage against the Bruins this season.
Mundy led Belmont with a match-high 16 kills. She also added 10 digs
for her sixth double-double of the season. Nilson, meanwhile, notched
her eighth straight double-double with 31 assists and 10 digs.
Sabrita Gulley led Kennesaw State (2-14, 0-1 Atlantic Sun) with seven
kills and ten digs.
The Bruins (11-5, 1-0 Atlantic Sun) return to action this coming Friday
when they host USC Upstate. First serve is set for 6:30 pm CT from the
Curb Event Center.
