GAME DAY CENTRAL

MURFREESBORO, TENN. - - Belmont Volleyball had one of its most exciting and meaningful days in recent memory Saturday, rallying past Northeastern and outlasting Georgia State to earn a share of the MTSU Blue Raider Bash tournament title.

The Bruins opened in the morning with Northeastern, in what evolved into a classic. After scoring the first three points of the match, Belmont watched as Northeastern scored 12 of the next 15. Despite tying it at 15-15 on a kill from junior Emily Cahill (Lakeside Park, Ky.), the Bruins dropped game one, 30-24.

Things would get worse before they got better for BU. A 4-2 lead on the serve of junior Cat Mundy (Dallas, Texas was short lived. Belmont hit a perplexing -.200 for the game as Northeastern built a 2-0 lead, winning 30-19.

After a short break, the Bruins worked themselves back into the match. An ace from Cahill helped Belmont storm out to a 12-3 edge. Northeastern would claw within three points on two separate occasions, but a kill from freshman Carly Frazier (Stillwater, Okla.) finished off game three for the Bruins, 30-20.

The momentum carried into game four, as Belmont rode the hitting of senior Jaye Schuler (Lexington, Ill.) and sophomore Jenny Gray (Greenwood, Ind.) to a 17-12 lead. After Northeastern inched to within 22-23, Frazier provided three kills and senior Brittany Card (Carlinville, Ill.) closed out the game with an ace, 30-25.

Loaded with energy and emotion, Belmont stayed aggressive to complete the miraculous comeback. Cahill supplied five kills as BU never trailed in winning game five – and the match – 15-7.

Mundy had a match-high 20 kills and senior Colleen Nilson (McHenry, Ill.) recorded a double-double with 43 assists and 14 digs.

It was Belmont’s first victory after losing the first two games since defeating Memphis in 2005.

In the nightcap, the Bruins faced another talented, seasoned foe in Georgia State. Nilson opened the match with an ace. A kill from Gray extended the advantage to seven, 14-7.

The Panthers got within one point three times – including 28-29 – before Schuler closed out game one with a kill for Belmont, 30-28.

Belmont endured a hiccup to start game two as Georgia State raced out 11-5. But behind the hitting and serving of Mundy, the Bruins turned the tables and claimed a 21-16 lead. Belmont kept the cushion and won game two, 30-24.

Amy Lusk led Georgia State back in game three, leading by as many as 11, 21-10. The Bruins struck back behind Schuler and Nilson, closing to 28-29 on an ace from Mundy. But Georgia State won the next point to win game four, 30-28.

Mundy and Frazier recaptured their pinpoint form in game four, pacing Belmont to leads of 11-5 and 17-8. The Bruins stayed at least five points ahead until Gray closed out the match with a kill, 30-21.

BU hit a healthy .247 against the strong Panther frontline. Mundy and Gray each tallied double-doubles, and freshman Megan Clements (Indianapolis, Ind.) recorded a career-high 20 digs.

Schuler, Mundy and Cahill were named to the All-Tournament Team.

Belmont (8-3) next plays at Tennessee Tech this coming Tuesday.
