BELMONT DEFEATS NORTH FLORIDA

GAME DAY CENTRAL

JACKSONVILLE, FLA. - - Belmont Volleyball returned to its winning ways Saturday afternoon, with a four game victory at North Florida, 30-23, 30-21, 34-36, 30-22.

After losing a heartbreaking four game decision Friday night at Jacksonville, the Bruins responded with balanced hitting, defense and serving. Erasing an early two point deficit, Belmont broke free midgame on the serve of freshman Carly Frazier (Stillwater, Okla.). Frazier provided two aces while junior Emily Cahill (Lakeside Park, Ky.) and freshman Kayla Albritton (Gainesville, Fla.) each had a kill during a key 6-0 run as the Bruins went ahead 17-9.

Behind three Frazier kills and two more aces from senior Colleen Nilson (McHenry, Ill.), Belmont cruised to a 30-23 game one win. BU hit .297 on just three attack errors in game one.

Game two was more of the same, as Belmont separated following a tight early start. Tied 6-6, Belmont scored eight of the next nine points behind the hitting of senior Jaye Schuler (Lexington, Ill.) and the serving of freshman Megan Clements (Indianapolis, Ind.). North Florida tried to fight back, but impressive hitting and blocking from Schuler and Cahill kept Belmont in control.

An Osprey attack error gave the Bruins game two, 30-21.

The hitting of Cahill and Frazier coupled with stellar serving from Albritton and Clements had Belmont on track for a sweep. A Schuler kill put the Bruins on top 19-14 before North Florida replied. A Kaley Read kill gave the Ospreys a 24-23 edge, precipitating frenzied play thereafter.

Belmont would stave off four game points before claiming the first of its own at 34-33. However, North Florida rode the play of Claire Yonutas to three straight points and a 36-34 win.

Game four swung back into Belmont’s favor with Nilson setting up the entire frontline for scores. The Bruin lead swelled to 20-12 on another putaway from Schuler. Underclassmen Albritton, Frazier and sophomore Jenny Gray (Greenwood, Ind.) shined as Belmont secured the match in four games.

Frazier led five Belmont players in double figure kills with 14. Schuler had 12 kills and eight blocks, while Cahill added 10 kills and seven blocks.

Nilson contributed yet another double-double with 48 assists and 16 digs. Gray chipped in her second career double-double with 10 kills and 12 digs.

With nine digs, senior Brittany Card (Carlinville, Ill.) went over 1,000 for her career.

Belmont (15-7, 5-2 A-Sun) returns to action Tuesday at UT-Martin.
