INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Belmont women’s soccer team (5-1)
rebounded from its first loss of the season earlier in the weekend with
a 1-0 win over Butler (2-3-1) on Sunday afternoon in Indianapolis. The
gamewinner was the fourth straight notched by a first year Bruin.
Less than two minutes before the end of the first stanza, freshman Erica
Carter (Spring, Texas) interrupted a pass between Butler defenders and
passed the ball to the awaiting feet of classmate Patience Whitten (Germantown,
Tenn.), who found the back of the net for the second time this season.
Butler spent the remainder of the match attempting to neutralize the
only goal of the game but was unable to get past the Bruins’ defensive
line.
The Bulldogs railed off 22 shots throughout the match compared to Belmont’s
10. Butler also held the advantage in corner kicks, 9-3.
Senior Micaela Crowley (Hoover, Ala.) played all 90 minutes inside the
net and finished with a season-high 10 saves.
“I thought we had really good production overall. Micaela and the
defenders did an excellent job today. We had a lot more offensive production
and good production from off the bench,” said Head Coach Lisa Howe.
“I was really pleased with the team today. For us to have lost
on Friday and come out today focused and ready to win today shows a lot.”
Belmont returns to action on September 21 as they participate in a tournament
by Southeastern Louisiana.
