NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Led by a pair of goals by sophomore Annie Musacchio
(Nashville, Tenn.), the Belmont women's soccer team (9-1-1, 3-0 A-Sun)
rolled to their fourth-straight win. The Bruins held off visiting ETSU
(4-4-2, 0-3 A-Sun), 4-1, and improved to 3-0 in the Atlantic Sun and 9-1-1
overall.
After taking control of the early portion of the first half, the Lady
Bucs were unable to contain the Bruins. BU’s defensive line helped
to keep the ball from crossing the midfield line for the remainder of
the stanza. With less than a minute left before halftime, sophomore Annie
Musacchio (Nashville, Tenn.) booted a corner kick into the box. She was
able to field her own attempt and fire a shot that was bobbed by ETSU
netminder Erin Bilyeu before finding the back of the net and putting the
Bruins up, 1-0.
After the break, Musacchio was able to find the back of the net again,
this time firing a shot that banged off the crossbar before slipping behind
Bilyeu in the 52nd minute. Less than two minutes later, freshman Ivy Bentley
(Huntsville, Ala.) netted her first collegiate goal. In the 59th minute,
rookie Jayme Trocino (Franklin, Tenn.) notched her third goal of the season
before ETSU’s Katie Green finally got the Lady Bucs on the board
with the team’s only goal of the match. The Bruins played keep-away
for the remainder of regulation and cruised to the 4-1 victory.
“This was a great example of us finishing set pieces. We played
well and took advantage of the corner kicks and free kicks,” said
Head Coach Lisa Howe. “We were able to take advantage of opportunities
and execute and finish.
“ETSU is a better team than what we saw today.”
Senior Micaela Crowley (Hoover, Ala.) went the distance inside the net
and because of her teammates’ stellar defensive effort, finished
with one save on the day. Musacchio
Belmont dominated in shots, 13-5, and also held the advantage in corner
kicks, 6-0.
Belmont returns to action on Sunday at the Whitten Soccer Complex. The
Bruins host A-Sun newcomer and first time opponent USC Upstate beginning
at 2 p.m.
