BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Belmont women’s soccer team (8-1-1,
2-0 A-Sun) completed a weekend sweep of Atlantic Sun foes on Saturday
afternoon in North Carolina. The Bruins recorded their eighth shutout
with a 1-0 victory over Gardner-Webb (3-6, 1-1 A-Sun). The win improved
BU to 8-1-1 on the season, marking only the third time the program has
recorded eight or more wins.
The first half was one that saw both teams attempt to feel the other
out, as the two compiled just two shots apiece in the opening 45 minutes
of play.
After the break, Belmont was the aggressor for the remainder of the match,
totaling three corner kicks to zero. However, the Bulldogs were able to
get six shots off to four for Belmont in the final 45 minutes, but all
three that were on goal were saved by senior Micaela Crowley (Hoover,
Ala.).
In the 55th minute, senior Kassidy Brown (Franklin, Tenn.) headed in
a corner kick by classmate Kari Lennon (Hoover, Ala.) to give Belmont
the 1-0 advantage.
Crowley went the distance inside the net and recorded four saves on the
day. Freshman Jayme Trocino (Franklin, Tenn.) recorded a team-high two
shots.
The Bulldogs held a slim advantage in shots, 8-6, while the Bruins held
the advantage in corner kicks, 4-2.
“I am really happy about today’s game,” said Head Coach
Lisa Howe. “We got off to a good start and Gardner-Webb made good
adjustments in the second half. We were definitely under more pressure
in the second half. But we were able to hold onto that lead late in the
game and that is a big accomplishment for us.
“Meredith (Brandt) and Jessica (Rix) played great for us today
as well as Micaela (Crowley) inside the net.”
Belmont returns to action on Friday, October 5th at the Whitten Soccer
Complex. The Bruins host ETSU beginning at 4:30 p.m.
