JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Belmont women’s soccer team (10-5-2,
4-4-1 A-Sun) ended its four match losing streak with a double overtime
tie on Friday night at Jacksonville (6-10-1, 4-4-1 A-Sun). The tie keeps
the Bruins in a three-way knot for fifth place in the Atlantic Sun and
keeps the team’s hopes of advancing to the conference tournament
for the first time in program history alive.
Despite outshooting the Bruins, 16-8, throughout regulation, the Dolphins
were unable to get the ball past senior goalkeeper Micaela Crowley (Hoover,
Ala.). Elizabeth Fink notched a game-high 10 shots but only two were on-goal.
Seniors Sarah Brandt (Hendersonville, Tenn.) and Kari Lennon (Hoover,
Ala.) and freshman Patience Whitten (Germantown, Tenn.) each tallied two
shots for the Bruins.
Jacksonville dominated in shots, 20-10, but Belmont held a slim advantage
in corner kicks, 4-3.
With tonight’s shutout, Crowley ties the program’s all-time
record for shutouts with a total of 15. She also narrowed the gap to only
42 minutes to becoming the all-time leader in minutes played.
“Our goal tonight was to not allow Jacksonville to score any goals.
We wanted to deny Keri Zwicker, who was the Preseason Player of the Year,
from scoring.
“I thought that the girls in back played well. Micaela [Crowley]
did a good job. She played all the way through both overtimes.
“We had some good chances but we didn’t play consistently
enough to finish for a goal. Now we just need to get ready to play on
Sunday.”
Belmont returns to action on Sunday at North Florida. The match is set
to begin at 1 p.m. CT.
