VALPARAISO, Ind. – The Belmont women’s soccer team (4-1)
had its four match unbeaten streak snapped on Friday night in Indiana.
The Bruins were shut out, 1-0, by Valparaiso (4-2) in their first road
match of the 2007 campaign.
Despite holding the advantage in shots (12-2) and corner kicks (6-2),
Valparaiso was not able to get a ball past the strong defensively line
of the Bruins. However, it was a penalty kick in the 61st minute of play
that lifted the Crusaders to the 1-0 advantage. That ball marked the first
time all season that any opponent had scored against Belmont.
Senior Micaela Crowley (Hoover, Ala.) went the distance inside the net
and finished with five saves. Freshman Patience Whitten (Germantown, Tenn.)
and senior Kari Lennon (Hoover, Ala.) were the only Bruins to notch shots
on the night.
“Valparaiso is a really high scoring and good attacking team,”
said Head Coach Lisa Howe. “Micaela had a good game. She finished
with five saves for us.
“Defensively, we limited them from scoring throughout the game
but we still need to work on our attack.”
Belmont returns to action on Sunday with a match at Butler University
in Indianapolis. Game time is set for 12:00 pm central time.
