Tenn. – Two Belmont female sprinters provisionally qualified
for the NCAA Regionals as the BU men’s and women’s track and
field teams competed at the Vanderbilt Invitational this weekend in Nashville.
Belmont sophomores Lynette Rives and Lizz Pollock both provisionally
qualified for the NCAA Mideast Regionals with their weekend performances.
Rives regionally qualified in two events: the 100 meters and 200 meters.
She won the 100 meters in a school record time of 11.71. Rives also placed
second in the 200 meters with a school record time of 23.72. Pollock qualified
for regionals in the 400 meter hurdles after she placed second with a
school record mark of 59.88.
Overall, the Belmont women finished eighth out of 24 teams at the Vanderbilt
meet. The Bruins had eight top-10 finishes and they broke five school
records. In addition to the three broken records previously mentioned,
BU’s 4x100 relay team broke the school record with an impressive
time of 45.90 as they placed second. The 4x400 relays team also broke
a school record with their performance. They finished fourth with a time
of 3:45.87.
The Belmont men finished 13th out of 21 teams with 21 points. They had
four top-10 finishes and had two school records broken. Hillary Cheruiyot
finished eighth in the 800 meters, but broke the school record in that
event with a time of 1:53.62. Brandon Grass broke his own school record
in the pole vault as he posted a mark of 14-07.25 while finishing 12th.
In addition, Kipkosgei Magut finished second in the 1500 meters with a
time of 3:50.87, while his teammate Brad Polley finished right behind
in third with a time of 3:50.99.
Both teams will get back into action next weekend at a meet yet to be
determined.
