Nashville,
Tenn. – The The Belmont men and the UAB women captured
the team titles at the 2006 Belmont Opener cross country meet held Friday
evening at Percy Warner Park in Nashville, Tennessee.
The Belmont men dominated the men’s race as they finished with
23 points, 31 points ahead of second place Vanderbilt. The Bruins had
five runners in the top-10, led by junior Collin Magut, who in his first
collegiate race won the individual title with a 5K time of 15:01.09. Teammate
Ryan Snellen placed third with a time of 15:07.42. Junior Jacob Buckman
placed seventh while junior John Brigham and sophomore Caleb Swartz finished
ninth and tenth respectively. Vanderbilt had two runners in the top-10
led by Austin Williamson, who placed fifth and Thomas Davis, who placed
sixth.
Other Belmont finishers included Brad Polley, who placed 29th.
The UAB women nipped Tennessee for the women’s title. The Blazers
finished one point ahead of the Lady Vols (57 to 58). Host Belmont finished
fourth. UAB placed four runners among the top-15. They were led by Elizabeth
Ambrus, who finished second with a time of 14:01.32. Tennessee had four
finishes among the top-10. They were led by Katie Flaute, who finished
in fourth with a time of 14:06.80. The individual champion of the women’s
race was Julia Hicks of Alabama, who posted a 4K time of 13:56.78.
Belmont had one runner in the top-five and four among the top-25. They
were led by junior Lauren Williams, who placed fifth with a time of 14:12.31.
Other Belmont finishers included: Elizabeth Smothers (17th), Brittany
Thune (21st), Megan Saunders (24th), Whitney Thurman (30th), Laura Kaplan
(55th), Mollie Schlarman (69th), and Abbie Sumrall (70th).
