2005-06 BELMONT SAAC
COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECTS

All Teams – Several teams and coaches joined campus leaders, administration, staff, faculty, and others for our annual “Move-In Day” Saturday, August 20th. Incoming students and their parents were greeted as their arrived and provided help in moving into designated housing.

Men’s Cross Country – helped sponsor the 4th annual ‘Together We Can 5k and Youth Running Festival’ on September 10 at Belmont. This running festival is a benefit for “FEED AMERICA FIRST”, a faith based hunger relief organization.
Women’s Cross Country/Track – participated in Hurricane Katrina Relief Effort by collecting money and food items needed by the hurricane victims.

Women’s Cross Country/Track –
team spent time visiting residents of the Belcourt Terrace Nursing Home. Team members walked the halls, visited with residents sitting in their rooms, listened to their stories about the past, and shared a musical experience from an outside group.

Women’s Basketball – team ran the “Together We CAN” running festival on September 10th for “Feed America First”, a faith based hunger relief organization. This year’s event is being used as a benefit for Hurricane Relief.

Women’s Basketball – conducted a clinic for Nolensville Middle School and remained for time of interaction with the youth.

Women’s Golf –
volunteer individually for several different service roles: youth minister in a local church, volunteer weekly in the campus FAC, Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital, and a local church nursery.

Men’s Soccer & Baseball –
Several members of these two teams were involved in Service Learning activities for a Community Health Class. They worked with the homeless in the local Room In The Inn program, volunteered at the Red Cross, spent time at Preston Taylor Ministries (program for underprivileged children) reading, feeding and playing with the children, and provided services at a local jail during Thanksgiving Break.

Softball – participated in Dog Day 2005 on October 1 at Centennial Park. The event is sponsored annually by the Nashville Humane Society and is a day honoring dogs. The team helped with various events such as a dog show, competitions, and various vendors who sold animal products.

Women’s Tennis – volunteered at the Professional Tennis Tournament held at Vanderbilt University in November. They helped with set up, tickets, and pass list.

Baseball – Barrett Owen spoke at a Baptist Church in Paris, Tennessee on Sunday, January 29th, celebrating Baptist Men’s Day in Tennessee Baptist churches.
Barrett spent the Bible Study hour with the young people prior to sharing his testimony in the worship service.

Women’s Soccer – Jamie Bullock and Kassidy Brown traveled to Cape Town, South Africa March 2-17 through Student Travel AND Exposure to South Africa to work at an orphanage.

SAAC – Members of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee collected team shirts to donate to Hand Held Products in New York for a “MARCH MADNESS’ basket raffle with all proceeds going to the United Way.

Volleyball – team participated in Belmont Family Literacy Day where they took turns reading to the children brought to campus.

Men’s Soccer – participated in a reading program February 20-24 at Fall Hamilton Elementary School. Each day selected readers were given a different theme for the reading time. The reading program will be an on-going relationship between Fall Hamilton and Belmont Men’s soccer team.

Men & Women’s Basketball – volunteered their time on April 1 to enrich young children’s reading skills in the event “Belmont’s Annual Family Literacy Day.” The players either read to or were read to by the participating children of the local Nashville Community. The players created a fun and exciting atmosphere that made reading much more interesting. The event brought approximately 200 children to the campus for reading.

Women’s Track – volunteered for the Country Music Marathon at the medical triage stations.

Women’s Golf – volunteered for the Music City Marathon, assisting in various triage groups.

Women’s Golf – assisted at the Bonnie Blackburn Girl’s Golf Fest. The athletes worked with junior golfers and taught the girls about the history of golf in Tennessee.

Volleyball – volunteered for the Country Music Marathon Health and Fitness Expo. They registered and checked in runners for the half marathon. Some team members also helped with medical triage the day of the race.

Women’s Tennis – volunteered at the Country Music Marathon and Half Marathon, serving as medical team triage helpers.

Cheerleaders – performed at the Adventure Science Center on April 22 as part of their “Body Quest Challenge Day”. They demonstrated stunts, pyramids, tosses, and tumbling in uniform while promoting good health and physical fitness through cheerleading.

Men’s & Women’s Tennis – came to the aid of one of their teammates during the devastating tornados that destroyed her family’s home and business. Both teams spent a day cleaning, picking up, and giving vital support to the family.

Cheerleaders – volunteered at the 2006 Country Music Marathon on April 29th. They split into smaller groups and worked 5 medical triage stations that lined the course.

Men’s Soccer – volunteered for the annual Country Music Marathon in April. The team worked with the medical triage to assist participants.

2006 Sports Evangelism Mission Trip to Venezuela – Ginna Beazley, golfer, and basketball players Jenny Conkle, Destri Bockey, Brooke Sunday, Brittany Myers, Laura Cowley, Andy Wicke, Will Peeples, Matthew Dotson, Keaton Belcher, Justin Hare, and Josh Goodman spent May 15-26 in three different cities in Venezuela doing ministry with Missionaries Paul and Shelley Scott. The team used basketball as a platform for connecting with youth and sharing their personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
