EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – The Belmont Track and Field teams got off to a strong start to open the 2014 OVC Outdoor Championships on Friday at SIUE. The men's team stands in sixth place while the women's team stands in seventh place after a full day of competition.
After the first day of the Decathlon, a pair of Bruins stands in the top five – sophomore Vinny Maniscalco (North Chelmsford, Mass.) stands third with 3,458 points and senior Tyler Newkirk (Atchison, Kan.) stands fifth with3,080 points. Both point totals are PRs.
In the field events, junior Austin Landis (Victor, Mont.) and freshman Stuart Landis (Victor, Mont.) finished fourth (56.77m/186'3") and fifth (55.47m/182'0") in the javelin. Junior Clare Sobon (Somerset, N.J.) took seventh (42.38m/139'0") in the discus while Walter Burn (Nashville, Tenn.) took 10th (42.40m/139'1") in the event on the men's side.
In the 3000m Steeplechase, freshman Maggie Harahan (Greensboro, N.C.) finished fourth with a time of 11:05.22. Several Bruins posted times and marks that advanced them to the finals on Saturday. Junior John Inniger (Arlington, Ohio) advanced in the 200m with a time of 22.08. Classmate Marcus Bridger-Wilkinson (Newbury, England) won his heat to finish second overall to advance in the 800m (1:52.60). Junior Erick Kigen (Eldoret, Kenya) and sophomore Eamonn Kichuk (Unionville, Ont., Canada) also move on to the final in the same event. Sophomore Emily Davis (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) moved on to the 400m finals after posting a time of 56.52.
In the men's 10,000m, senior Matt Miller (LaPorte, Ind.) and junior John Sharpe (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) finished fourth (30:59.07) and fifth (30:59.08), respectively, separated by only one one-hundredth of a second. Sophomore Hannah Wittman (Lindenhurst, Ill.) earned silver in the 10,000m, crossing the line in 36:02.10 to close the first day of competition.
The conclusion of the Decathlon and Heptathlon begins at 9 a.m. on Saturday morning while the field events commence at 11 a.m. The 2014 OVC Outdoor Championships can be seen live on the OVC Digital Network. Live stats will also be available.
