Bruins Get 20th Win in 6-2 Victory at Austin Peay

Alec Diamond

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – The Belmont baseball team (20-10, 7-2 A-Sun) defeated Austin Peay (18-11, 6-0 OVC) by a score of 6-2 on the road Tuesday night, snapping the Governors' seven game win streak.  The Bruins have now won six of their last seven games.

The Bruins struck first, stringing together two hits and a walk to score one run in the top of the second.  Junior captain Drew Turner (Shelbyville, Tenn.) started the rally with a single to left field, and then stole his seventh base of the season to advance to second.

Junior Jared Breen (Marietta, Ga.) walked and freshman Alec Diamond (Kennesaw, Ga.) singled to center to load the bases.  Sophomore William Dodd (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) then sent a long fly ball to deep left field, driving in Turner with the sacrifice fly.

Belmont added one run in the third to take a 2-0 lead over the Govs.  Sophomore Greg Brody (Dacula, Ga.) tallied his seventh double of the season down the left field line.  Junior Judah Akers (Cookeville, Tenn.) then drove Brody in with a single up the middle, extending his hitting streak to 10 games.

The BU solo run innings continued in the fourth when Diamond led things off with his second single of the night.  After stealing second base, the Belmont catcher advanced to third when Dodd reached base on an error by the APSU second baseman.  Diamond came in to give the Bruins a 3-0 lead on a ground out by senior Dylan Craig (Signal Mountain, Tenn.).

In a change of pace move, Belmont tacked on two runs in the fifth, extending its lead to 5-0.  Freshman Matt Beaty (Dresden, Tenn.) and Turner each recorded their second hits of the game to put two men on base for the Bruins.  A sacrifice fly from Breen drove in the first run of the frame, while two walks and a hit by pitch scored the second for BU.

Austin Peay finally got on the board in the fifth, scoring an unearned run on an error and a pair of singles off of Belmont reliever junior Tim Bowles (Hendersonville, Tenn.).  After a couple of scoreless innings, Belmont added an insurance run in the eighth on two walks, a single by Brody, and a sacrifice fly from Akers to make it 6-1.

The Govs added one run in the bottom half of the eighth on three hits, but it wasn't enough as senior Garrett Fanchier (Lebanon, Tenn.) shut Austin Peay down in the ninth to give BU the 6-2 victory.

Belmont totaled six runs on 11 hits and one run.  Freshman Dan Ludwig (Naperville, Ill.) picked up the first win of his career after allowing only two hits, striking out two, and walking none in three innings of shutout baseball.

Diamond led Belmont at the plate with a three-for-three day in the victory.  Brody, Beaty, and Turner each added two hits for the Bruins, while Akers drove in two runs.

Austin Peay finished with two runs on 12 hits and one error in the loss.  It marked only the sixth time this season that the Govs scored two runs or less.  Rolando Gautier picked up the loss after allowing one run on three hits in a two-inning start.  Cody Hudson and Reed Harper led APSU at the plate with three hits each.

Belmont will host USC Upstate on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday this weekend.  The Spartans are tied with the Bruins and Kennesaw State at the top of that Atlantic Sun Conference with a league mark of 7-2.  The first two games of the series are scheduled for 5:00 p.m. CT, while the series finale will be a 12:00 p.m. CT contest.
