Home Runs Lift Bruins Over Memphis Tuesday
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Behind four home runs, Belmont (7-9) defeated Memphis, 12-5 Tuesday night at Rose Park.
Despite Memphis taking a 3-0 lead, the Bruins scored five unanswered run to take a lead they would not relinquish.
Freshman Nick Egli (Brentwood, Tenn.) blasted two home runs for the Bruins Tuesday night, with his first coming in the second, sparking the Belmont offense.
Jamie Ritchie (Buford, Ga.) hit a two-run shot in the third giving Belmont a 4-3 lead. Drew Ferguson (Knoxville, Tenn.) launched his sixth homer of the season in the fifth to continue extending Belmont's lead.
A sacrfice fly scored a run for Memphis in the sixth, but Belmont answered with four more runs in the bottom half, including Egli's second homer of the game.
RBIs from Ferguson, Egli and Drake Byrd (Pigeon Forge, Tenn.) came in the eighth and secured the 12-5 victory.
James Buckelew got his 44th career start on the mound, tying him for third all-time in program history. The left-hander, who earned his first win of the season, matched a season-best six innings giving up six hits and four runs. He walked three and struck out two.
Belmont will travel to Oklahoma this weekend for a three-game series with the Sooners.
