Weather Ends Belmont-Eastern Illinois Series Finale in 5-5 Tie After 10 Innings

CHARLESTON, Ill. – Following a lengthy rain delay and continuing storms in the Charleston area, the series finale between Belmont and Eastern Illinois ended in a 5-5 tied after 10 innings. 

EIU got on the board first in the second as Jason Scholl scored off an RBI single from Dane Sauer. The Panthers added a run in the third to take a 2-0 lead.

Matt Beaty hit a leadoff double in the fourth and scored off a wild pitch to cut EIU's lead to one.  In the fifth, Alec Diamond hit a leadoff single and advanced on a sacrifice bunt from Drew Ferguson. An EIU balk allowed Diamond to cross the plate and tie the game at 2-2.

EIU plated two runs in the bottom of the seventh to take a 4-2 lead.

The Bruins responded in the eighth by taking a 5-4 lead. Nick Egli led off the inning with a single up the middle. Matthew Kinney's RBI double scored Neil Hickman, who pinch ran for Egli, putting Belmont within one. An EIU passed ball allowed Kinney to score from third, tying the game at 4-4. Diamond reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Washington to give Belmont the lead.

EIU tied the game in the bottom of the ninth, sending the game to extra innings. 

Due to continuing storms in the Charleston area, the game was called in a 5-5 tie after 10 complete innings. 

Belmont will continue its road swing as the team travels to Western Kentucky on Wednesday.
