Hedgepeth, Saunders Named Academic All-District
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - - Belmont men's basketball juniors Mick Hedgepeth (Crossville, Ala.) and Scott Saunders (New Orleans, La.) have been named to the 2010-11 Capital One Academic All-District First Team for University Division District Four.
Hedgepeth, a Preseason All-Atlantic Sun selection, has 14 double figure scoring games this season for the Bruins. He also ranks among the Atlantic Sun Conference leaders in six statistical categories. Hedgepeth sports a 3.71 grade-point average in his chosen major of accounting.
Saunders, who was named Atlantic Sun Player of the Week Dec. 21 and has emerged as one of the most formidable post players in the conference, has 12 double figure scoring games this season for the Bruins. He ranks among the NCAA leaders in points per 40 minutes played and is among the league leaders in five statistical categories. Saunders holds a 3.84 GPA in his chosen major of finance.
Both Hedgepeth and Saunders advance to the national Capital One Academic All-America Team ballot, where First, Second and Third Team All-America honorees will be selected later this month.
Belmont men's basketball leads the nation in Capital One Academic All-Americans since joining the Atlantic Sun Conference in 2001-02 with eight.
Hedgepeth and Saunders become the 12th and 13th Belmont men's basketball players to earn Capital One Academic All-District honors the past decade. They are the lone men's basketball representatives from the Atlantic Sun Conference this year.
Joining the two Bruins on the District Four First Team are Zack Novak of the University of Michigan, Ty Proffitt of Morehead State University, and Jalin Thomas of Central Michigan University.
University Division District Four consists of NCAA Division I participants from the states of Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee and Alabama.
Student-athletes are nominated and voted upon by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
