Rick Byrd to be Honored as 12th Titan Prior to Sunday's Game vs. Saints
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - - Belmont University men's basketball head coach Rick Byrd will be honored as the '12th Titan' prior to Sunday's game between the Tennessee Titans and New Orleans Saints at LP Field.
Byrd, who ranks 10th among all active NCAA Division I head coaches with 616 career victories, has led the Bruins to eight Atlantic Sun Conference championships (four regular season, four tournament) and four NCAA Tournament appearances since 2006.
The 2011 Hugh Durham National Coach of the Year and a member of the NAIA Hall of Fame, Byrd has also overseen a program marked by unparalleled academic success. Belmont leads the nation with nine Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-American honorees since 2001, and the Bruins have been recognized by the NCAA for high achievement in its annual Academic Progress Rate (APR) report every year since inception in 2006.
The '12th Titan' – a fan initiative introduced by the Tennessee Titans prior to the 2010 season - recognizes a middle Tennessee area leader who embodies the qualities of commitment, integrity and team spirit.
As part of the festivities, Byrd will raise the '12th Titan' flag just prior to kickoff.
