Men's Golf Finishes Second at Murray State, Dan Smith Ties for Second Individually
MURRAY, Ky. – The Belmont men's golf team finished in second at this week's Murray State Invitational held Monday and Tuesday at the Miller Memorial Golf Club in Murray, Kentucky. In addition, senior Dan Smith finished tied for second place in the individual standings.
Belmont carded a team score of 288 in Tuesday's final round to finish in second place with a 54-hole score of 867. They finished seven strokes behind tournament champion and host Murray State. It marks the second time in three events this fall that the Bruins have finished second as a team.
Senior Dan Smith, who had the individual lead after 36-holes, posted a 75 in the final round to finish in a tie for second place with a score of 214. He finished two strokes behind individual medalist William Hunt of Murray State. Smith's finish was the best by a Bruin since April of 2009 when Danny Amundson placed third at the TSU Big Blue Intercollegiate.
In addition to Smith, three other Bruins finished among the top-20. Freshman Max Markley tied for fifth place, a career best, after shooting an even-par 71 on Tuesday. He finished with a 54-hole score of 217. Sophomore Elliott Wickenden tied for 11th place, also a career best, with a score of 220. Freshman Logan Hance carded a 71 in the final round to finish in a tie for 16th place at 222.
Freshman Ben Simpson, a Kentucky native, tied for 27th place with a score of 225, while freshman David Novinger competed as an individual and finished tied for 13th place at 221.
The men's golf team is back in action next Monday and Tuesday, October 11-12, at the Cincinnati Bearcat Invitational in Hebron, Kentucky.
