Dan Smith Named Academic All-District

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Belmont senior golfer Dan Smith (Bournemouth, England) was named to the CoSIDA/CapitalOne Academic All-District IV Second Team as announced Friday.

The Bournemouth, England native was named to the University Division Spring At-Large Second Team after posting a 3.94 grade point average (GPA).  He graduated last week from Belmont with degrees in Marketing and Finance.  During the 2010-11 season, Dan led the team in scoring with a 74.2 average and posted four top 10 finishes.  His best finish of the season came at the Murray State Invitational last October as he posted a career-best second place finish.

For his career, Dan finished with a 75.3 scoring average, which ranks him eighth all-time in Belmont Division I era.  He also was named to the National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA) Cleveland Golf All-American Scholar Team last summer.

In addition, Smith earned numerous campus awards during his senior season.   Belmont's College of Business Administration named him their Student of the Year for 2010-11, while the Belmont Athletic Department honored him with three awards: the David Fish Award (awarded to a Belmont student for their support of athletics), the Graduating Senior Academic Achievement Award (presented to the individual with the highest cumulative GPA among all graduating senior student-athletes), and the Betty Wiseman Award (presented to a graduating senior student-athlete who epitomizes the qualities of leadership, perseverance, and selflessness).

Smith becomes just the third BU golfer in the school's Division I era to earn Academic All-District honors, joining Danny Amundson and Jon Webb.  He is also the fifth Belmont athlete this year to earn this honor, joining Judah Akers, Mick Hedgepeth, Brett Parker, and Scott Saunders.
