Stetson Shuts Out Men's Soccer On Friday Night

DELAND, Fla. – The Belmont men's soccer team (6-7-2, 2-2-2) was shutout on the road by Stetson (6-5-2, 3-1-1) in a 2-0 contest in DeLand, Florida on Friday night.

"We were uncharacteristically off in our passing game," Head Coach Earle Davidson said.  "We had a bit of possession, but we had some trouble commanding the midfield like we usually do. Their first goal was after a sloppy play in the midfield by us.  We gave a cheap ball away and they punished us for it."

Stetson's Jonathan Mendoza ended up making the Bruins pay on that first goal.  Gonzalo De Mujica fed Mendoza a through ball up the right side, where he beat Belmont goalkeeper Lou Manning (Southlake, Texas) from about 23 yards out in the 17th minute.

The Hatters built on their own momentum, taking a 2-0 lead less than eight minutes later.  De Mujica recorded his second assist of the night after finding Joakim Helland on a Stetson corner kick.  Helland headed home the cross for his second score of the season.

Belmont fought to get back in the game throughout the rest of the rest half and the entirety of the second frame, but Stetson played defensive with a two-goal advantage.  The Bruins were unable to cut into the Hatters' lead and left with a 2-0 defeat.

Stetson outshot Belmont 18-4 and recorded five corner kicks to the Bruins' two.  Manning finished with five saves in the loss, while Hatter goalkeeper Andreas Schnabl tallied one stop.  Manning now has 78 saves on the year and 141 in his career at BU.

The Bruins will next travel to Florida Gulf Coast, which defeated Lipscomb tonight by a score of 2-1 in Fort Myers.  As the Atlantic Sun Conference schedule comes to a close, each and every contest may determine the Belmont squad's postseason fate.
