NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The 2013 version of Belmont men's soccer begins regular season action this Friday as the Bruins make the familiar trek down Belmont Boulevard to crosstown rival Lipscomb for a 7 p.m. showdown with the Bisons at the Lipscomb Soccer complex.
The Series Record
The match will mark the 17th all-time meeting between the two teams with Belmont owning an 8-6-2 advantage in the all-time series.
Last Time Out
Belmont is coming off a pair of exhibition contests that showed mixed results.
The Bruins traveled to Xavier in the first contest and a penality kick by senior Sam Miller (Gilbert, Ariz.) led Belmont to a 1-0 victory against the No. 22 ranked Musketeers. In the final match, Evansville shutout the Bruins 3-0 at Rose Park in a hard fought affair.
A Closer Look at the Returning Bruins
The Bruins return six starters from a 2012 campaign that went 6-8-3, including notable wins over N.C. State and Bradley.
The defense is led by senior defender Charlie Dankert (Carmel, Ind.). Dankert appeared in 17 matches last season, making 10 starts.
Offensively, sophomore forward Raphael Colmanette (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and senior midfielder Diego Figueroa (Pensacola, Fla.) look to replace the loss of last year's leading scorer Brandon Tarr (Knoxville, Tenn.).
In 2012, the pair finished as Belmont's second leading scorers notching three goals apiece. Colmanette finished second on the team in shots on goal percentage (.688).
A Fresh Defense
The 2013 edition welcomes 11 newcomers to the squad. A trio of freshmen goal keepers, led by starter Grayson Rector (Peachtree City, Ga.), look to replace the loss of senior keeper Lou Manning (Southlake, Tex.).
Manning completed a storied career with the Bruins as the outgoing senior finished ranked second in all-time minutes played (4,329) and fourth in career saves (206) in Belmont history.
Scouting the Bisons
Last year's leading goal scorer Reece Halcombe leads Lipscomb into the 2013 season as the Bisons return eight starters from a 2012 squad that finished 7-12-1, tied for fifth in the Atlantic Sun Conference.
The match also mark Lipscomb's first regular season contest of the season as the Bisons are coming off a pair of exhibition victories against Martin-Methodist (4-1) and Alabama Huntsville (5-0).
Mark Your Calenders
Belmont opens its home slate of contests Saturday, September 7, as Missouri State comes to Rose Park for a 2 p.m. match with the Bruins.
