CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Belmont men's tennis team won seven of 11 singles matches and earned one individual title as they competed in the UTC/Baras Fall Classic held this past weekend in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
Senior Rafael Matos, a Recife, Brazil native, captured his first individual fall title as he won the Silver Singles Flight. He swept through the quarterfinals and semifinals in straight sets, beating Kennesaw State teammates Gokalp Ozdemir 6-2, 6-2 and Gianni Kubin 6-3, 6-3. In the finals, he defeated Sebastian Hagn of South Florida 4-6, 7-6, 6-1.
Junior Bruno Silva won the consolation title in the Silver Flight. After losing to Igor Santos of Jacksonville State in the main draw, he beat Stephen Crofford of Chattanooga in quarterfinals (6-3, 6-4) and Ryan Spencer of Kennesaw State (6-4, 4-6, 10-5) in the semifinals. In the finals, he defeated Felipe Watanabe of Jacksonville State 6-1, 6-1.
In doubles, Belmont went 3-2 in two flights. In the Blue Flight, Rodrigo Amaral and Rafael Matos won the consolation bracket. They lost in the quarterfinals of the main draw and then beat Chopra/Smith of UTC 8-5 and then defeated Marcec and Sundberg of Jacksonville State in the final 8-3. In the Gold Flight, the duo of Fernando Mussolini and Bruno Silva beat Matt Feury and Alias Kovalenka 9-8 of North Alabama in the quarterfinals, but fell in the semifinals to William Disterdick and Roberto Viera of Chattanooga 9-8.
The men's tennis team returns to the court on October 14-16 at the Louisville Fall Invitational in Louisville, Kentucky.
