Men's Track and Field Finish Strong at APSU Spring Fling

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – The Belmont men's track and field team continued to tune up in the early outdoor season with a strong showing at the Austin Peay Spring Fling over the weekend.  The Bruins recorded nine top three finishes at the day-long meet.

 

Freshman Caleb Darnell (Lafayette, Tenn.) paced the BU runners, winning the 400m with a time of 51.37, good for the 13th-fastest time in the Atlantic Sun.  Classmate Zach Gray (Lee's Summitt, Mo.) finished second in the 110m Hurdles with a time of 15.30.  Belmont had its deepest showing in the 800m, with three finishing in the top-seven.  Freshmen Tyler Newkirk (Atchison, Kan.) and Brien Pafford (Jacksonville, Fla.) took second (2:02.09) and third (2:02.74), respectively, while sophomore Andrew Mullins (Chattanooga, Tenn.) nabbed a seventh-place finish (2:08.38). 

 

In the field events, senior Joe Frye (Roscommon, Mich.) continued to dominate.  He took first in the shot put (14.82m), discus (44.15m) and hammer throw (55.00m).  Classmate Pierce Greenberg (Raleigh, N.C.) finished second in the hammer (40.13m).  Senior Matt Fiedler (LaGrange, Ill.) set a personal record in the pole vault with a mark of 3.65m.
