Men's Track and Field Compete at Three Weekend Meets

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Belmont men's track and field team saw action at several different meets this weekend.  Members competed at the Alabama Relays, the Raleigh Relays and the Vanderbilt Black and Gold Invitational, coming away with a combined 14 top-25 finishes.

 

At the deeply fielded Alabama Relays, freshman Marcus Bridger-Wilkinson (Newbury, England) took seventh in the 800m (1:54.24).  Sophomore Josh Helton (Franklin, Tenn.) grabbed a 15th-place finish in the 1500m with a time of 4:01.10.  Senior Clay Hannah (Lebanon, Tenn.) finished 22nd in the event.   In the 100m Hurdles, freshman Zach Gray (Lee's Summit, Mo.) took 16th (15.96) and senior Matt Fiedler (LaGrange, Ill.) was 17th.  Gray finished sixth (55.00) in the 400m Hurdles followed by classmate Caleb Darnell (Lafayette, Tenn.) in 18th.  Fiedler was the lone Bruin competitor in the field events, grabbing fifth in the javelin with a mark of 49.00m and a ninth-place finish in the long jump (6.58m).

 

At the Vanderbilt Black and Gold Invitational, another handful of Bruins competed well. Freshman Brien Pafford (Jacksonville, Fla.) was the top BU finisher in the 800m, taking 14th (2:00.80).  Classmate Tyler Newkirk (Atchison, Kan.) and sophomore Andrew Mullins (Chattanooga, Tenn.) finished 16th and 22nd, respectively, in the event.  Senior Joe Frye continued to command the throwing events.  He took first in the discus with a heave of 47.23m and was third in the hammer with a mark of 56.31m.  Classmate Pierce Greenberg (Raleigh, N.C.) finished 17th in the hammer.

 

At the highly competitive Raleigh Relays, senior Kip Hill (Liberty, Mo.) finished second in Section III of the 5000m with a time of 14:39.06, while freshman Erick Kigen (Eldoret, Kenya) grabbed a seventh-place finish in Section II of the 5000m with a time of 14:31.43.  Sophomore Matt Miller (LaPorte, Ind.) took 16th in Section III.  In Section IV, sophomore Brandon Mahaney (Lafayette, Tenn.) finished 22nd.

 

Belmont returns to action on April 9 at the Boston-Moon Classic hosted by Tennessee State.
