Senior Field Athletes Lead the Way for Men’s Track and Field at A-Sun Championships
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Led by a pair of first-place finishes by senior Joe Frye (Roscommon, Mich.) and an outstanding decathlon performance by classmate Matt Fiedler (LaGrange, Ill.), the Belmont men's track and field team found itself in third place with a total of 30 points after the first day of competition at the 2011 Atlantic Sun Outdoor Championships.
Fiedler opened the day with a strong showing in the decathlon, taking first in the high jump with a mark of 1.95m and the long jump with a distance of 6.74m. He crossed the line second in the 400m with a time of 51.95. Fiedler finished the day in first place with a total of 3,545 points in the eight-man field. He also earned a fourth-place finish in the long jump with a mark of 6.61m.
Frye dominated both throwing events on the first day, winning both the hammer throw (57.20m) and shot put (16.01m). His win in the hammer throw marked the third of his outdoor career after taking the titles in 2010 and 2008 while his shot put mark sets a new Belmont record. Senior Pierce Greenberg (Raleigh, N.C.) grabbed seventh place finishes in both the hammer throw (41.13m) and the shot put (12.74m).

On the track, sophomore Matt Miller (LaPorte, Ind.) recorded a fifth-place finish in the 10000m with a time of 32:07.74.
Freshman Zach Gray (Lee's Summit, Mo.) finished eighth in the 100m Hurdles with a time of 15.07 to qualify for the finals on Saturday.
