MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -- The Belmont men's track and field team continued its indoor season, competing at the Blue Raider Invitational hosted by Middle Tennessee State University over the weekend. The Bruins concluded the one-day meet with 20 top-15 finishes.
Junior Josh Helton (Franklin, Tenn.) snagged a second-place finish in the Mile to wrap the meet as BU's top place getter. Classmates Matt Miller (LaPorte, Ind.) and Brandon Mahaney (Lafayette, Tenn.) took fifth (4:24.62) and sixth (4:24.66), respectively. In the 800m, sophomore Erick Kigen (Eldoret, Kenya) finished third with a time of 1:56.72. Freshmen Kurtis Gibson (Highbridge, England) and David Everett (St. Louis, Mo.) rounded out the Belmont presence in the event with fifth (1:57.78) and seventh (1:59.90) places, respectively.
Also shining in the distance events were sophomore Evan Scruton (Columbus, Ind.) and junior Kyle Sullinger (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio), who finished fourth (9:08.52) and sixth (9:18.41), respectively, in the 3000m.
Freshman John Inniger (Arlington, Ohio) led BU in the sprint events, taking 11th in the 200m (23.06) and 13th in the 55m prelims (6.90).
In the field events, sophomore Tyler Newkirk (Atchison, Kan.) picked up top-10 finishes in the high jump and pole vault while freshman Zach Hughes (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) led the Bruins in the shot put, taking 13th (10.92m). Classmate Cole Phillips (Franklin, Tenn.) and Newkirk took 14th and 15, respectively, in the event. In the weight throw, Hughes again was BU's top finisher, taking 12th (12.33m), followed by Phillips in 17th.
Belmont returns to action this week, splitting time between the Indiana Relays and the Birmingham Invitational.
