Record Breaking Performance Highlights Men’s Track and Field at Indiana Relays

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Led by sophomore Caleb Darnell's (Lafayette, Ten.) record setting performance in the 600m, the Belmont men's track and field team had a positive showing over the weekend at the highly competitive Indiana Relays.  The Bruins wrapped the two-day meet with six top-25 finishes.

 

Darnell shattered Belmont's 600m time, taking first in his heat with a time of 1:26.21 en route to taking 21st overall.  In the same event, sophomore Tyler Newkirk (Atchison, Kan.) and junior Andrew Mullins (Chattanooga, Tenn.) finished 28th and 29th, respectively.

 

Freshman John Inniger (Arlington, Ohio) took first in both of his heats, going on to finish seventh in the 200m A.M. sessions and 42nd in a deep 400m field.

 

Also turning in strong performances were juniors Matt Miller (LaPorte, Ind.) and Josh Helton (Franklin, Tenn.).  The pair took fifth (8:36.39) and sixth (8:37.58), respectively in the 3000m.

 

In the throwing events, freshman Zach Hughes (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) led the Bruins, taking 25th in shot put (11.23m) and 29th in the weight throw (10.91m).  Freshman Cole Phillips (Franklin, Tenn.) finished 26th in the shot put (10.55m).

 

Belmont returns to action on February 11 at the MTSU Valentine Invitational.
